World Heritage

In the year 1972 was adopted by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

The Czech Republic adopted this Convention in the year 1990.

The main idea of this Convention is protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage for future generations.

The sites that are recognized for outstanding universal value are listed on the World Heritage List.

The hop growing and processing buildingds in Žatec are perceived in the long term as very specific constructions, whose values need to be protected and preserved. The idea of international visibility of the Žatec cultural heritage has greatly helped to raise awareness of specific values in the wider public in the past 15 years, and many previously less valued objects are rightly viewed as the basis of the common identity of the current Žatec community.

The theme of the "Hops Growing and Processing Monuments in Žatec" has been included by the Ministry of Culture since 2007 in the National Indicative List for Nominations for the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since then, there has been a significant increase of the interest in the hops heritage at the national level and the preparation of the materials for this nomination documentation took place. The nomination documentation got really an appropriate title: Žatec – The Town of Hops.
